Chapter Seven
Cade didnât normally sleep in, but after the make-out session last night, theyâd needed a cool down, and watched a thriller, which had MerriBee hiding her face against his chest for half the movie, which had been just fine with him. Heâd held her, and looped her long hair around his hand, savoring the cool, silky feel of it. Watching a movie with Bee, feeling her in his arms, tucked against his chest, he felt calmer than he had in a long time. He also felt at peace. Heâd met Melvin, heâd seen photos of his dad, he knew where his dad had been raised, and the values heâd had, and it settled something inside Cade, giving him room to feel other emotions, like this desire for Bee.
It wasnât all sex though. He could see them together, having a life together. It was the first time heâd pictured a future with anyone, but with her, he could see marriage, and a baby, possibly several babies. Sheâd be a good mom. She was giving and nurturing, but also strong, smart, funny. Sheâd love her kids but sheâd be no pushover, and he could see them at the ranch, see them at Christmas, which was even stranger since he didnât like Christmas.
But with her, heâd want Christmas, and he wouldnât mind all the decorations. The kids would love them. Kids loved Christmas. Heâd make sure his kidsâtheir kidsâhad good Christmases. No fighting, no drinking, no gut-wrenching scenes that tore everyoneâs heart from their chest.
He didnât know anything about being a good husband, or a father, but he could learn. He and Bee were already friends. More than friends. He wanted her. Wanted to keep her with him. It was rather caveman-like, but it was how he felt. She was his, and heâd take care of her. No one else took care of her. No one else made sure she was safe. But he would.
It was after midnight when Cade finally fell asleep, and he slept in the next morning. He was still in bed at six when he got a call from Willis, but he was awake and alert the moment he answered the phone.
âSheâs sick,â Willis said without preamble. âSeemed a little achy yesterday and wanted to skip the big family dinner and just go to bed early.â
Even without saying her name, Cade knew Willis was talking about Dot. âWhy didnât you call me last night?â he demanded, flinging back the covers and climbing from bed.
âDot said sheâd fire me if I did.â
Cade stepped into his jeans. âShe wouldnât fire you.â
âShe said it was just a little cold, and youâre on your vacationââ
âHow is she this morning?â
âSheâs back asleep but was awake earlier. She didnât want to eat anything. Em said sheâs running a fever.â
âHow high?â
âA hundred and two.â
Cade swore silently, thinking that if it went much higher it would be really serious. âHas a doctor been called?â
âNo oneâs coming out here in this weather. Itâs been snowing for two days.
